Best International Destinations to Visit as a Person of Color
Updated: Mar 2, 2022

International travel is something that can in some situations be dangerous for people of color. We love to travel and see new destinations around the world, but they are not always sure of how safe each destination they choose will be. People in some international destinations discriminate against people of color, while some international destinations are more welcoming to anyone and everyone. I would love to encourage you to start traveling outside the US if you have not done so yet. There is really a whole world out there waiting for you and I want you to embrace it without fear!
As your travel advisor, I am aware of which international destinations won’t discriminate against you. I will always recommend those destinations to you, but that doesn’t mean you must choose one of those options. You can always choose to vacation somewhere else, but you must be aware that you may not be as safe in the area you choose. If you have been wondering where you can go for your next international vacation, here are a few places to consider.
Best International Destinations to Visit as a Person of Color
Brazil
Brazilian culture has been heavily influenced by Africans, which isn’t surprising since there was a time when Africans were brought to this country as slaves. Thankfully, people of color are embraced in this country now and you can experience many of their cultures and traditions. In between those cultural experiences, you must take a little time to enjoy the cable car ride to the top of Sugarloaf Mountain to see the spectacular views. And don’t forget to relax on the sandy beaches, although Copacabana Beach is more known for its partying atmosphere.
Paris, France
People of color have been inspired by the sights and sounds in Paris for many years now, so why shouldn’t you follow their footsteps and find a little inspiration for yourself! Quite a bit of African American history can be discovered when you take the time to participate in a walking tour. Of course, you must also take the time to visit the Louvre, Eiffel Tower, and other popular Parisian attractions.
Johannesburg, South Africa
Everywhere in South Africa is the perfect place to experience the African culture, but you will definitely feel the authentic African vibe during a vacation in Johannesburg. Over in Soweto, or South West Townships, you can see the homes of two Nobel Prize winners. Those homes were owned by Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu. I always recommend participating in any cultural or musical events taking place in this city when you are there because every event is always full of delicious food, fabulous music, and plenty of locals you can talk to.
Martinique, French West Indies
Martinique is an island that normally doesn’t get much love, which is disappointing since it has so much to offer. This diverse island will offer you the soft sand you desire at the beach, as well as the hiking trails that lead far up the mountains. While there are multiple cultural events on this island, I recommend you begin at the art museum. The museum was created inside an old distillery, so you get a little history to go with your art. Martinique also holds a Carnival every February, just like many other destinations around the world. However, this is one of the better Carnival’s, because you can actually participate in all the fun instead of being held behind the spectator line.
Morocco
Morocco is a fascinating country and there are so many must-see destinations there. However, if you want the best of the best, I recommend beginning your journey in Fez. This city happens to be both the cultural and spiritual destination in the country and you will feel it within the ambiance as soon as you arrive. During your visit to Fez, you must take the time to check out the oldest medina in the Arab world, as well as the oldest university. If you time your visit to the university just right, you can be there at the same time as many religious pilgrims. When you are finished exploring Fez, you may want to venture to Marrakesh and Imlil Valley to see what the rest of the country is like.
Japan
The culture in Japan dates back many centuries, which makes this a destination everyone must visit at least once. African Americans are known for their assistance in the growing hip-hop culture in Japan, so that is one avenue you must explore if you choose to vacation there.
These are a few of the best international destinations you must visit as a person of color, but there are many others. If you have never felt comfortable traveling internationally as a person of color, now is the time to reconsider! I want to encourage you to embrace these cities and countries and open your eyes to cultures and traditions you can’t experience back home.
